After De retired as an engineer from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the sailing aficionado and his wife set sail around the world for eight years, mingling with international travelers and locals in some 40 countries.
Today, the two Sierra Madre residents are so active in civic organizations, volunteer work and local politics that they are known as "Mr. and Mrs. Public."
"The more you go out, meet people and do the things you want to do, you'll have a much richer life and be satisfied with the way things are," De Alcorn said of retirement.
