Retiring Retirement

News from the web:

Retirement is one of the most significant life transitions in adulthood, and current “retirees” and the 78 million Baby Boomers just behind them are re-writing the rules. No longer satisfied with just a nice dinner and commemorative watch, golf or tennis lessons, or arts and crafts courses at the local Senior Center, many of us want a lot more out of our “golden years.” The experts are baffled but they really shouldn’t be, it has been coming for a while. After nearly a century of decline the male retirement age, stabilizing at 55 in 1980, has been moving slowly in the opposite direction ever since. Retirees are getting a little older each year, that is, postponing the time they actually leave the workforce. The important question is, “Why are Baby Boomers delaying retirement?”

Building a Successful Modern Retirement Portfolio

News from the web:

In the good old days, retirees were advised to take their savings and lump-sum payouts and invest everything in "ultra-safe" bonds, CDs, and the occasional blue-chip stock. Over the last few decades, as people began enjoying longer and more active retirements, the conventional wisdom was to increase one’s exposure to stocks to generate higher returns and serve as a hedge against inflation. Not surprisingly, conventional wisdom is wrong. Here’s an alternative approach to generating consistent returns while managing risk.

News from the web:

The March 2010 issue of Consumer Reports Money Adviser has an interesting article on how to avoid regrets during retirement. The article, which draws on a survey of nearly 25,000 subscribers, is simultaneously comforting and cautionary. According to the author, the lesson is:

While many of us tend to fret about whether we’re properly prepared for retirement, once we’re actually there we tend to adjust our situation and even thrive.

Those nearing retirement are worst off

News from the web:

Pre-retirees have the lowest savings (£8,593), lowest incidences of home ownership (76 per cent) and largest average mortgages (£16,694).

Two fifths of pre-retirees save nothing per month and one fifth still owes more than £75,000 on their mortgage.

Clive Bolton, at-retirement director of Aviva Life, said: "By 2011, there will be almost 18m people in the UK who are over 55.

News from the web:

Since the most recent market meltdown, Americans are re-evaluating their financial situations.

Some, mostly those who have invested some time and money in the process of “planning,” are doing so with at least a clue of what their target is or should be.

Those who have not planned are likely more fearful of the uncertainty of the future, fueled additionally by the fact that they have no clue of what they may be aiming at.

Boomers and the future of volunteering

News from the web:

Boomers, as they have in almost every phase of their lives, also pose unique challenges to nonprofits. Many boomers are looking for challenges, hoping to use the skills they've acquired over a lifetime of work. They also may be less interested in devoting their entire retirement years to a single organization rather than working on short-term projects and moving on.

Boomers Working Longer, Finding New Opportunities

News from the web:

As Baby Boomers approach retirement age, it's only natural that members of this generation should stop and reflect on what they have contributed to society—individually, collectively and in their careers—and where they can possibly go from here.

As a Professor of Physical Therapy and Director of the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse's Clinical Education program, Gwyneth Straker is as close to the top of her profession as she feels she's going to get—at least without expending more time and energy than she's willing to give at this point.

At 60, she's also feeling both the pull of retirement and the pressure to keep going for as long as possible—something that is driven both by financial concerns (her 401(k) took the same hit as everyone else's recently) and by her desire to keep mental deterioration at bay by remaining active and involved.

104-year-old's story shows hard work keeps you healthy

News from the web:

I shared the story of Helen Rosetta, now of Stafford County, who has been an active woman for all of her 104 years.

The details of her life, especially the fact that she has never driven and that she routinely walked miles to visit friends during most of her life in Pennsylvania, rang several memory bells.

I began remembering dozens of folks I've done stories on through the years who worked or exercised into their later years.

News from the web:

When most people reach retirement age they think about kicking back, taking it easy, and maybe picking up a hobby.

But what if your hobby is also your job?

At Alta Sierra Ski Resort there's a ski instructor who may be a little grey, but is still young at heart.

Andy Anderson has given the same ski tips time and time again, but he doesn't mind at all.
