Retirement Choices Should Include Health and Activities

News from the web:

I have been astounded by the predominance of advice on the internet for retirement planning, investments, real estate and every other form of advice where someone can make some money out of it.

While what is remarkably lacking is the thought that maybe people who are retiring might just want to worry about pursuing another 30 or more years of an active and healthy lifestyle.

Obviously retirement planning should have a strong focus on the financial aspects but if you are not in good health both physically and more importantly mentally, retirement tends to start looking a lot less attractive.

The phrase Use it or Lose it has real relevance here.

Getting to this point took endurance. It required going to school, raising two kids and forging a career path, while relying on a patchwork of child care. But now that Palacios sits comfortably in her mid-50s, she's part of a demographic group that has researchers intrigued. Called middle boomers, this group is a whopping 29 million strong and has entered its 50s with a shift in priorities.

Paul Skidmore is hesitant to call himself retired. The former insurance claims adjuster in Finksburg, Md., was laid off in February 2008 and has been job hunting for more than a year. Although at 62 Skidmore is old enough to begin drawing Social Security, he doesn't want to permanently leave the work force.

"On the one hand, my brain is telling me go look for a job," says Skidmore, who originally planned to retire at age 66. "On the other hand, why bother? Just retire."

COSTA RICA: Headhunting First-World Seniors

News from the web:

SAN JOSÉ, Mar 8, 2010 (IPS) - The Costa Rican government has declared retirement communities, aimed at attracting U.S. pensioners, to be "of national interest." Plans to create "retirement clusters" providing complete health services for older adults are seen as a profitable prospect for this Central American country.

Old people as a business: this is the bottom line of the government and private sector's new project.

Noting the rapid development of the "health cities" in Mexico and Panama, Costa Rican officials and entrepreneurs are poised to tap into the perceived gold mine among middle and upper-middle class senior citizens of industrialised countries.

The concept is simple, and includes slashing red tape to the minimum by providing one-stop residence permits at the Migration Directorate, so that foreigners, especially the well-heeled, can come to live in the country.

Why I Never Want To Retire

News from the web:

I guess I can be thankful to the economy for making me understand that I do not ever want to retire. I graduated in 2008 December and I am still searching for work. Until October I was immersed in my CPA studies. However, right after that, I retired. At the very least, I experienced what it is like to be retired.

Most people associate retirement with not working anymore and engaging in activities that you really like. On top of that, by the time you are retired you do not have to worry about paying a mortgage,or a car loan. It seems that all there is left is to receive your pension and social security payments and enjoy life. Seems like a pretty good deal, right?

Retired Baby Boomers, Retired Veterans and Our Active Senior Citizens Would Enjoy the Benefits of Volunteering Their Time

News from the web:

Most people think of senior retirement as a time to plan on doing all the fun things that they had to forgo because of the demands made on them by their job. However, there are an increasing number of baby boomers who view retirement as a time when they can contribute to the society, and seek opportunities to perform volunteer work.

Over the years, many of the retiring baby boomers have acquired knowledge and skills that may be helpful to others. So some retirees find volunteering a source of incredible fulfillment. This will give an elderly senior purpose and a new meaning to life.

No cake for you: retirement age and “rights”

News from the web:

As an actuary who has worked with annuities, I pay very close attention to stories about retirement age.

Before I get into the recent news stories, I want to address the old canard “The life expectancy was less than 65 when 65 was set as a retirement age.”

I’m not saying that they got they’re flat-out lying with this remark, but that they’re looking at the wrong number.

Let me give you an example – a population where everyone dies either at birth [age 0] or at age 100. Life expectancy would be a weighted average between these two numbers, depending on the probabilities. Let’s start at a 50/50 extreme, and you’ve got a life expectancy of 50 years from birth. If the infant mortality is at 1%, then the life expectancy becomes 99 years. But the problem of financing retirement doesn’t change at all — if you survive infancy, you live to 100, no matter the probability.
