The two economists call their paper “Mental Retirement,” and their argument has intrigued behavioural researchers.

Data from the US, England and 11 other European countries suggest that the earlier people retire, the more quickly their memories decline. The implication, the economists and others say, is that there really seems to be something to the “use it or lose it” notion — if people want to preserve their memories and reasoning abilities, they may have to keep active.

The Retirement Age Debate

Under current law, the normal retirement age -- the age at which full retirement benefits are payable -- is already scheduled to increase from 66 to 67 in two-month increments from 2017 to 2022.

Joe Bergola, 62, has been putting his back into it for nearly 40 years, reports CBS News correspondent Anthony Mason.

"This job involves a lot of bending," said Bergola. "Year in and year out just too many aches and pains."

In retirement, seniors maintain active lifestyle through sports

Five days a week, Gloria Doro plays softball. Twice a week, she hits the gym and works on her bench press. And to top it off, she is an accomplished track and field athlete with hundreds of medals to her credit.

Doro, 78, has had a lifelong affinity for sports and is one of a growing population of people 50 and older who regularly immerse themselves in athletics.

Doro, of Hemet, and a former postmaster in Mountain Center, will compete in eight events during the two-week long OLDlympics in the San Jacinto Valley, an Olympiad of sorts that features everything from track and swimming to bridge and shuffleboard.
