Another study from the University of Toronto found that regular aerobic exercise in middle age and beyond trains the body to use oxygen more effectively in generating energy, which seems to delay biological aging by as much as 12 years.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Not ready to retire? Consider your options

News from the web:

Many of you are in a dilemma. You are at the retirement age, however, can't afford to retire. You want to not work, but your expenses, the economy and a lack of savings or retirement funding make it necessary to keep working. You are tired, ready for a break, and don't know what to do.

Here are the facts: The unemployment rate for over-55 people is the highest since post World War II. Those looking for jobs currently include the over 55 group. Those baby boomers are looking for jobs at a rate higher than any other demographic group. There are so many reasons for this jump. They are the group that may be the hardest hit in their inability to sell their home. Some have skills that are hard to market in today's job market. Their skills are not as fine tuned as some of the younger. And some of their trades are not used like they were 10 years ago. And let's face it, there just may be some age discrimination taking place.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://retiredresources.blogspot.com/2010/12/not-ready-to-retire-consider-your.html' title='Not ready to retire? It is more so for athletes because a lot of them retire at a very young age compared to the average working person. Most professional athletes will retire after the age of thirty while most workers will end their careers after the age of sixty. During that thirty year gap athletes have to find something to do. A lot of them find careers in the sport they left behind but a large number of them suffer from moderate to severe depression and need counselling. Work should be done to help athletes adjust to their lives once they leave the sport they play.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Retirement just means more work

News from the web:

For Donna Ferracone, retirement just means she has more time to volunteer.

Ferracone is the vice president of administration for the Kiwanis Club of Redlands (Noon), but that's just the beginning of her service in the community. Most people simply don't have enough in the bank to retire comfortably. While that is certainly a big part of the equation, it's just the tip of the iceberg. Despite the constant news coverage of impending doom, many, if not most Americans are still depending on their social security payments to support them through their retirement. The sad fact is that it simply isn’t possible. It is doubtful that Social Security by itself would be enough to get the average American through their twilight years.Americans are living longer and longer. And, we are leading more active lives. Retiremetn has a new meaning today! Gone are the days when retirees sat at home reading newspapers and playing cards every other afternoon. Today’s retirees are traveling, taking classes, learning to dance, and trying new things that they were not able to experience while setting aside funds for the future and going about the business of raising their own families. Now they are taking the time to do all these great things, butthese great activities and pastimes require funds in order to enjoy. This is the number one reason you should begin as early as possible to set aside funds for your retirement but make active plans to invest those funds to maximize the potential of limited funds.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

The Great Boomer Lateral-Hiring Spree Continues

News from the web:

Americans are living longer, healthier lives than ever before.

And many of them are choosing to live out their latter years not by moving to the Sun Belt — or an active retirement community in a university town (”he can play squash while I audit Special Topics in Flemish Printmaking!”) — but by working. Here's some advice from the book "How to Love Your Retirement" (Hundreds of Heads Books, www.hundredsofheads.com, $13.95), straight from people who've done it:

"My pension and social security have been almost enough, but I am not one to feel secure without a little savings. I like to keep some extra money coming in somehow. This is a good idea for anyone looking to retire: to have a skill you can use once in a while to keep you busy, make you feel useful, help your bank account a little. I do some home nursing every now and then, stay with a new mother for a few days, that kind of thing. I have one friend who got a real estate license, and her husband got a broker's license, and she helps her friends and their children with real estate - not as a full-time thing, just every now and again. She enjoys it."

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Retirement Just Got a Little Harder

News from the web:

Life spans are longer than ever, stretching out retirements many more years, and before the stretching begins, many of us live in more places and hold more jobs through our careers than in the past. You may not have even noticed, but every paycheck showed that you paid social security. As you became older and reached your early forties, you began looking at your financial condition in relation to your retirement years. When you reach sixty, the excitement will mount, and you will start defining your plans for retiring.

No one wants to enter retirement just to lose their health and eventually their life. Put simply, most retirement calculators and planners aim for decades of level spending, but most people reduce their spending as they move through retirement. That's a disconnect that can significantly skew the results of the typical planning exercise, says a recent study from the Society of Actuaries and the Actuarial Foundation. It could lead workers to take greater investment risks, or be overly frugal during their final years of work or their first active years of retirement.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Is the retirement savings system broken?

News from the web:

Things are looking up for employer-based retirement plans.

Despite the staggering loss of savings many experienced as a result of the downturn, Americans still believe the current retirement savings system still works.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Retirement for Younger Baby Boomers Will be a Different Experience

News from the web:

Younger baby boomers, those aged 50 years old in 2010, foresee a vastly different retirement world than 50 year-olds who were surveyed in 1996. According to a pair of surveys by active adult community developer Del Webb, today’s 50 year-old plans to retire four years later, at a median age of 67 versus age 63 nearly fifteen years ago. Fully 73% of baby boomers plan on continuing to work in retirement. In recent articles, we’ve written a lot about retirement and different aspects of planning for it. Often risks are specific to your particular retirement plan, but several are common in all plans. Even after you transition into retirement, it’s still vital to periodically assess your risks. Kick the tires on your retirement plan every now and then to see if you need to make changes. Here are the top four risks we see when preparing and living in retirement:

visit us at RetiredResources.com

May he live long and prosper

News from the web:

In an interview with The Toronto Sun, Leonard Nimoy has announced his retirement from acting. Most adults would like a retired life of ease and prosperity. They are no longer willing to work for 80% of their life, for a less than certain shot at a life of splendor and ease awaits them for the last 20% of their allotted days on earth.
The retirement paradigm

The old model of adult life said that you work for x years, typically until you are 65 years old. Then you retire. If you do it correctly, you will save enough during your working years to live comfortably with social security and your pension from your job and your lifetime of savings to provide that level of comfort. That model governed many people's thinking through the 20th century.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Retirement age 'should be scrapped'

News from the web:

Equality commission says an ageing population and increased willingness among older people to work should see default retirement age scrapped.
Workers should be able to stay in their jobs beyond the age of 65, and employers should be incentivised to allow older employees to work flexibly, the UK's equality watchdog said today.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Looking Forward To Your Retirement

News from the web:

Did you know that you’ve been working towards retirement since you got your first job? It required going to school, raising two kids and forging a career path, while relying on a patchwork of child care. But now that Palacios sits comfortably in her mid-50s, she's part of a demographic group that has researchers intrigued. Called middle boomers, this group is a whopping 29 million strong and has entered its 50s with a shift in priorities.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Some Fun Ideas For Retirement

News from the web:

If you are thinking about retiring then you probably are feeling both excitement and nervousness. At the very least, I experienced what it is like to be retired.

Most people associate retirement with not working anymore and engaging in activities that you really like. However, there are an increasing number of baby boomers who view retirement as a time when they can contribute to the society, and seek opportunities to perform volunteer work.

Over the years, many of the retiring baby boomers have acquired knowledge and skills that may be helpful to others. So some retirees find volunteering a source of incredible fulfillment. Life expectancy would be a weighted average between these two numbers, depending on the probabilities. Let’s start at a 50/50 extreme, and you’ve got a life expectancy of 50 years from birth. If the infant mortality is at 1%, then the life expectancy becomes 99 years. But the problem of financing retirement doesn’t change at all — if you survive infancy, you live to 100, no matter the probability.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Forced retirement increasing, says charity

News from the web:

More than 100,000 people were forced to retire against their will last year as employers used the default retirement age to cut back on jobs, according to Age Concern and Help the Aged.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Stay active as you age

News from the web:

With the 2010 Winter Olympics under way in Vancouver, The Cascades Verdae is lighting its own flame by harnessing the active spirit of the Olympics and holding its very own winter games. No longer satisfied with just a nice dinner and commemorative watch, golf or tennis lessons, or arts and crafts courses at the local Senior Center, many of us want a lot more out of our “golden years.” The experts are baffled but they really shouldn’t be, it has been coming for a while. After nearly a century of decline the male retirement age, stabilizing at 55 in 1980, has been moving slowly in the opposite direction ever since. Retirees are getting a little older each year, that is, postponing the time they actually leave the workforce. The important question is, “Why are Baby Boomers delaying retirement?”

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Most people are simply not comfortable with retirement

News from the web:

Most people are simply not comfortable with retirement. For such people, they would rather hear or death than retirement. I guess the reason to their action is lack of preparation. Most people hold up retirement planning until when it becomes way too late. But one thing they fail to understand is the fact that they can actually achieve a lot as retirees. You can too, if you take the time to plan for your retirement. Before you retire you need to think of certain things like – Where would you want to travel to when you retire, what kind of house you want to live in and what’s the exact life style you would prefer to live, etc. These questions will guide you towards planning for your retirement.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Can You Retire Before You Die?

News from the web:

Most of us are older with these statistics…

Out of 100 grouping who starts engaged at the geezerhood of 25, by the geezerhood 65:

* 1% are wealthy
* 4% impact competent top stowed absent for retirement
* 3% are ease working
* 63% are addicted on Social Security, friends, relatives or charity.
* 29% are dead.

More Statistics on “The GOLDEN Years”

visit us at RetiredResources.com

How to make peace with life after work

News from the web:

People don't think enough about how to keep themselves active and excited in retirement," says Rick Robertson, an associate finance professor at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Over the last few decades, as people began enjoying longer and more active retirements, the conventional wisdom was to increase one’s exposure to stocks to generate higher returns and serve as a hedge against inflation. While only about 20% of folks who haven’t yet retired are highly satisfied with their current retirement planning, 70% of actual retirees report they’re highly satisfied. According to the author, the lesson is:

While many of us tend to fret about whether we’re properly prepared for retirement, once we’re actually there we tend to adjust our situation and even thrive.

visit us at RetiredResources.com

Transition Yourself Into Retirement In Just A Few Ways

News from the web:

Lets be utterly honest.
